Gambling Goblins of England

End of An Era Coming Soon...

As for 2021-22 season, 9 of the 20 clubs playing in the Premier League have a gambling sponsorship in front of their Jersey. Burnley, Crystal Palace, Fulham Leeds, Newcastle, Southampton, West Ham, and Wolves all have gambling companies underneath their crest on their jerseys. Over 45% of thew teams have a gambling sponsor and it's not on one the top 6 teams in the EPL. Even in the Championship, 17 of 24 teams have betting companies as their sponsors. This in total equates to 27 of the top 44 teams in England showcase betting to the millions of viewers (Mirror UK)

Two years ago, the House of Lords (Parliament) released a 192 page doctrine of the impact of illustrating gambling to the viewers. The sponsorships are worth over 140 million pounds in income for the two leagues. Ricky Parry, EFL Chairman, states that the league will see catastrophe if the sponsorships ended abruptly. "It would be potentially catastrophic if it came in overnight," Parry said. "Phased in over time, frankly clubs would need to find a way to adapt. If any changes were to come in quickly, major problems would arise."

With the amount of press and scrutiny the teams are receiving from the House of Lords, it is believed that all clubs are expected to remove their gambling advertisement by 2023 (Punters Page). With this, it will help the government's expenses to decrease from the gambling epidemic cost of 1.2 billion dollars per year.

Teams are accepting these advertisement bids on their jerseys because it is great money that keeps them afloat. Bigger teams don't need to accept the gambling sponsorships because they receive more money in revenue off tickets, viewerships etc. Gambling companies are offering big money to teams that need the money in relation to Bankruptcy. If all teams eliminate the usage of gambling on jerseys, they would need a bigger percentage of the overall revenues of the league to help wipe out the media use of gambling.

Next week, we will be discussing the plethora of youth talent.

  1. I am not surprised to read that most of the teams in the EPL are sponsored by gambling companies as they are huge money makers across the globe. It is a little surprising to see that not one of the top 6 teams in the EPL is sponsored, but as stated in the article they don't need the money like the smaller teams do. I doubt that all teams will have these sponsors removed by 2023, as the stigma around gambling seems to get swept under the rug all the time. It will be interesting to see how these clubs replace the sponsor if they do decide to move on or if they will even be able to stay afloat financially without the massive sponsorships from gambling companies.

  2. I actually find it extremely interesting to see that professional sports organizations--especially those that have an international fan base. As big as gambling is in the US, there is not a single sports team that I can think of who is sponsored by large companies such as draft kings. I do understand why the British government finds this partnership concerning, but their interference in this regard is unjust in many ways; if gambling is organized and can help clubs grow (especially those who have trouble competing with larger organizations) it can be productive when well regulated.

  3. I never noticed how many teams are sponsored by gambling companies. The House of Lords is putting clubs in a tough position. Without the sponsorships, the clubs will collapsed. I am curious to see what companies seize the opportunity to potentially sponsor clubs that are performing well. I do have to agree to Matt's comment above. Why is having a gambling company as a sponsor concerning? How does the government know that the ending of sponsorships will decrease the gambling epidemic cost by 1.2 billion per year?

  4. It came as a shocked me to realize how many companies were gambling companies on the teams jerseys. I think it would be unfair to change overnight because the clubs would not have time to adapt to losing their sponsorships that bringing so much revenue for their club. I think slowly implementing changes would be more beneficial and give clubs more time to adapt.

  5. Very interesting movement by the clubs in England. What it makes me think about is the contrast to the U.S. In 2018, Congress allowed sports betting to be legal again and since then I've seen the gambling companies become more and more prevalent. There are multiple commercials for them, loads of advertisements on courts and fields, and they are even mentioned in game breaks, or pregame and postgame shows. The legality of sports betting has caused it to become a much more popular thing among the masses in a matter of 4 years. It is interesting to me how the U.S. is encouraging the advertisement of sport gambling while the U.K. is doing the exact opposite.

  6. This is very similar to what is happening to American sports. Some arenas names are being changed to gambling companies. As well as many advertisements in stadium promote gambling sites. Gambling is becoming more and more prevalent as states and cities are legalizing it more and more. I think this is going to have a long term bad effect on sports as it will tarnish its integrity.

  7. It is interesting to learn about sports gambling in Europe as compared to what I know about it in America. Bigger teams seem to have the advantage in this situation, as they do not have to use gambling advertisements. Hopefully over the next few years sports gambling can be reduced or eliminated.

  8. The prevalence and presence of gambling advertisement in English football is certainly a tool for mid-sized teams for advertising revenue. Still, though the US is starting to legalize gambling in certain states and therefore have more advertising for it, it does not rival the EPL. It is not surprising that this constant visibility has an impact on viewers, though, it dos not seem to be going away anytime soon as these clubs rely on it greatly, as shirt advertisements continue to carry more weight in the EPL.
