Professionals Need to Be Professional
Two weeks ago, Mason Greenwood was accused of rape and assault against his now ex girlfriend. Harriet Robson, posted on Instagram pictures and videos of herself bleeding from her face, and bruises surrounding her entire body. In the videos, she states Mason Greenwood did this. Since the accusations, Mason Greenwood has been suspended from his club, Manchester United, for the time being.

Following, teammates such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Paul Pogba and more have unfollowed him and haven't spoken to him. Nike has dropped Greenwood from a sponsored athlete (The Sun). Even in Fifa, has removed all his cards from the game. However, Manchester United is still paying his 75,000 pound weekly salary on leave. With all the scrutiny coming towards him, it is very challenging to see Greenwood to play for the Red Devils again.
Greenwood came up from the academy of Manchester United and has skyrocketed to one of the most valuable young players in the world. He had a market value of over 120 million pounds. United can't call him back to the squad because he is suspended, so must likely

With more emphasis on adding young stars to team's, how do you contain these type of athletes that have never had money or world popularity until now. We don't see these type of stories with famous athletes because everybody has security/publicists who keep their client calm. But with a 20 year old wonder boy, team's need to pay more attention before a player ruins his career over bad press. Not to mention, clubs do not want to be near this type of mess. In the last two weeks, Manchester United are in a goal drought and need their attackers to score.
Greenwood has been a special talent for years now and it's a shame player's regress their playing due to outside media. Soccer is a sport that cares about the well being of everybody. The EPL was a big supporter of the end racism movement and will have the same intentions with Mason Greenwood. All in all, young athletes need to act professional before they hurt their own career and hurt their own club.

Being a Manchester United fan myself, I remember hearing about all the potential of Mason Greenwood and him being one of the biggest growing stars in the EPL. However, this series of events have made international news and I appreciate the league taking such a strong stance on it and enforcing a punishment. I wonder what the rules/stipulations in his contract are that allow him to continue to be payed weekly by Man U?
ReplyDeleteI find it interesting that you addressed the effect that money and publicity can have on young celebrities--athletes, musical artists, and many other young super stars can be found burning out from the constant attention they get on a daily basis. Although he was and still is a great player, time and time again one can see a similar trend in young, fame-crazed individuals. American football players are constantly being prosecuted for their violent actions towards their families, and this is a testament to such a notion. There simply is no room for this type of behavior in today's world.
ReplyDeleteIt is very common for football players to be accused of rape and sadly it is very hard to tell if they are false accusations for money or if they are true. Most accusations actually do not originate from girlfriends, they are often labeled as "one night stands". What's different from this case is that it is his girlfriend and that she released a voice clip that confirmed him raping her. Todays young celebrities often thing they can get away with everything but this has been a real shock to that belief and hopefully we can work as a sport and as a society from eliminating these disgusting acts from ever happening.
ReplyDeleteAs a woman myself that likes to enjoy sports, I am absolutely disgusted with Mason Greenwood's actions. Athlete should be held to a higher standard because of their fame and the impression they can make on the public. If I am United, I would never let Mason back on my team because of the horrible press surrounding him that will follow him for the rest of his career.
ReplyDeleteIt is unfortunate to see a player with a huge career do such a despicable thing to his girlfriend. Players in the league have so many young kids looking up to them, so their actions should be that of a role model. It is horrible that Mason thought he could get away with this, and I hope his fame does not dull the consequences he faces.
ReplyDeleteThis video and event illustrates the rising culture in sexual misconduct that is being revealed by athletes. Not just athletes but famous people for different reasons sometime think they can act however they want to without consequences. This certainly will almost ruin Mason Greenwood's career which is sad to see but it is warranted. Honestly I would like to see more athletes charged in court and not just lose their jobs which doesn't happen for regular people.
