Where the Money is Coming From
Money Talk
Currently, Newcastle is 14th in the table of the Premier League and has gone up 4 spots out of relegation since the repurchasing of the club from Yasir al-Rumayyan, the public face of the (PIF).
The English Premier League in total will earn roughly 6.1 billion dollars from revenues. Of that 2.5 billion is accounted for television rights and another 1.5 is from sponsorships/advertisements (Statista). English soccer has different leagues where teams can be promoted and demoted. Team's would rather be in the Premier league because all of the money is there.
Following a sharing revenue model, each team earns a small percentage equally for playing in the EPL. The league below is called the Championship. If a team is demoted from the Premier League to the Championship, the club will lose an estimated 100 million dollars from relegation. All premier teams have to follow the financial fair play act so all teams try to be equal with each other. That has not been the case for the last couple of years.
Recently, the EPL has had interest with deep pocket Middle Eastern's. Sheikh Mansour, owner of Manchester City, bought the club for 300 million euros and has spent an additional
1.5 billion euros on players over the transfer market. Just like Sheikh did with Manchester City, the Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), has bought majority of 80% of Newcastle. Their estimated worth it over 300 billion dollars (Marca). With owners that don't care about the million dollar fines for not obeying the financial fair play act during the transfer windows, Newcastle can soon be a powerhouse just like the top six teams.
I am incredibly interested to see what happens with New Castle and their new owner as they begin their quest to become top of the table once again. I don't know how well they will do, but many people seem to think that throwing money at a problem is the end all be all solution. In the case of soccer and many other sports, that seems to be the solution that many owners use. Only time will tell if New Castle can put together a winning club again, but I expect them to be met by adversity in the near future.
